George D. Ratos, age 78, of Sugar Grove, Illinois passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2002 at the Provena-Mercy Center in Aurora, Illinois. He was born on April 18, 1924 in Valsamata, Kefalonia, Greece, the son of Dimitrios and Eftihia (Tsakarisianos) Niforatos.
George was united in marriage on November 29, 1953 at the Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago, Illinois to the former Georgia P. Kutrumanes, and they spent the next 38 happy years of their lives together until her passing on October 24, 1991. Mr. Ratos was a member of St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Aurora, IL. George was a member of the Cephalonian Brotherhood, and a past member of the St. Athanasios Parish Council.
After moving from Bellwood in 1971, he and his wife Georgia were the owners and operators of "The House of Plenty Smorgasbord" in Sugar Grove, IL. Their son Jim and grandson Jimmy assumed the management, but George was always there to help. Mr. Ratos enjoyed spending time at the restaurant so that he could visit with his customers and employees, George enjoyed the outdoors, especially vegetable gardening and flowers. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother who will be remembered for the love he gave to his family and many friends.
He is survived by his son, James (Mary) Ratos of Yorkville, IL, his daughter, Joy (Jim) Dravillas of Sugar Grove, IL; his grandchildren, Nicole, Peter, Jimmy and Tommy Ratos, all of Yorkville, IL and Alex and Doula Dravillas of Sugar Grove, IL; his brothers, Dan (Elaine) Niforatos, Theotokis (Eleni) Niforatos, Taxarathis (Sylvia) Niforatos, and Art (Lillian) Niforatos; his sister, Elefteria Niforatos; as well as his dear friend, Muriel Kokas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dimitrios and Eftihia; his wife Georgia; his brother, Gerasimos Niforatos; and his sisters, Stamo Vineris, Marica Stathoulis and Stefania Vartelas.
Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 at the St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church in Aurora, IL, with Father Peter Spiro officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Bristol, IL. Friends may call from 4 until 9 p.m. on Monday, December 30, 2002 at the Larson-Nelson Funeral Home, 410 E. Countryside Parkway, Yorkville, IL. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Homes, (630) 553-7611.
